Oh, man. Having to think back to 1997 is hard, but I'll try.
I'll admit that part of it was liking Barret a lot, certainly more than
most of the fandom seemed to like him. And I thought that they had a lot in
common once I looked at the backstory - both of them had hometowns that
were destroyed by the same people, although they were dealing with it in
different ways. I remember thinking that they had a lot of common ground
that would be a good starting point for a relationship. They were two
people who had been through a lot, trusted each other enough to fight
together, and could genuinely relate to each other.
Also, they were good friends, and respected each other, even when they
disagreed. So that was a large part of it. I suppose that's part of what I
was hoping for in my own life, which is no doubt why it has such a draw for
me even now.
