Fandom Snowflake, Day 9

I think I'll save Day 8 until the end, or when I really need it.

Day 9
In your own space, talk about what surprises you about fandom. It could be a pairing or fandom you never thought you'd like. A fanwork type you never knew existed. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I don't think that anything's going to top my surprise back in 1997 that there were other people who did this stuff, and that there were entire sites devoted to writing it and talking about it. That really blew my mind, knowing that not only were there other people out there who openly did this stuff, there were enough of them to have active and large websites for it! (I was too young for zines, so I didn't have any real idea that it went back even further than that. I found out about that in college in a book of essays about sexuality in sci-fi - I wish I could remember the title!)

Other than that... hmm.

- For some reason I was a bit surprised when I realized podfics existed. I don't know why, because books on tape aren't a new thing. It just startled me when I realized that it had been applied to fandom as well. (It's a good thing and I keep meaning to download a few, if I can ever find them in my main fandoms, because it'd be interesting to hear how they're acted out.)
- [Fandom Specific: InFAMOUS] It's always interesting coming out of one game in a series hating a character, then having the second make you actually really care about them again, to your surprise. But that was exactly my experience with Zeke in InFAMOUS 1 and 2.
- It still honestly amazes me how long ship wars can go on. (I think that I've reached that wonderful state where I ship almost anything and don't care what people think about it, though, so I'm probably biased.)
