Before I go into NaNoWriMo mode for November...
In a conversation a few weeks ago, someone brought up the point that while fic and art and the like is fun, meta is more important to fandom than most people give credit for - that discussions keep things going and inspire people. And, y'know, maybe this is something that I haven't spent enough time on, lately. I always find it hard to even post about the games I'm currently playing, lately; I always get caught up by the game, or whatever.
So the month of December is hereby going to be Meta Month for me, and I'm going to spend some of November coming up with topics. If anyone has any suggestions - and any fandom you've ever seen me talk about anywhere ever is fair game, although if I don't feel like I know much about it I'll say so - please comment!
It doesn't matter if the ideas are general or specific - I'm hoping to get a few of the essay ideas that I've had written for this month, for instance. It can be about broader multifandom ideas, as well. I have a few ideas for that.
Also, if you would like December to be Meta Month for you as well, please let me know, and I'll read your stuff too. <3 And feel free to invite others to participate - the point of meta, for me, is to start discussion, and discussion requires other people.
Posts so far!
1. Introduction (because I figure that if I'm going to talk about fandom in a broader sense I should give people an idea of my bias.)
2. Sidequests: How do they work in the context of plot?
3. Rants can be dangerous.
4. Love Letters to Aliens, or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love Xeno
5. (FFVIII) So who is this Seifer guy anyway?
6. (Brigandine) My first fandom.
7. (FFVIII) The various forms of magic
8. (SO2) In which I finally figure out why I don't like the "official" couple.
9. On remakes and reboots
10. Thoughts on sex scenes in fic
11. MPAA ratings (and ratings in general) for fanworks
12. Getting over the pond
Other ideas, which may or may not happen in order!
- Shipping with rare/unusual pairings, and why I always seem to end up doing it.
- Corollary to the above - But what are your thoughts on polyfic?
- Encouraging small fandoms to exist and/or grow - how?
- Loving villains - for their villainy, or despite it?
- Why are deeply flawed canons more fun to play with than more complete/better developed ones?
- Shipping styles - OTPs compared to shipping one character in multiple relationships
- Foreign language words within a fic written in another language.
- Tabletop fic - when is it fanfiction and when is it original fiction?
- The hunt for active fan communities/the difference between finding fandom and finding other fans
- Community moderation: The "I" in community
Fandom-specific ideas:
- Mass Effect: That essay I was tapped to write which is turning more into a discussion of why I like slightly antagonistic pairings, but I'm posting it anyway. (It's mostly about Ashley/Liara. Mostly.)
