[So I just had a really bad week and it's taken me this long to recover. Only way I'm going to make it through this Meta Month goal thing is by spamming. We'll see how many I have time to do, but I'll have to plan my time carefully; SO and I are going to have to work on other projects today as well. The saddest thing about being a fan of primarily Japanese console RPGs is that you never know when a game that looks awesome is going to be released in the Western Hemisphere.

I had known that MPAA ratings were controversial, and I still remember the outcry when ff.net decided to switch away from them for copyright reasons. But I had never really looked at their requirements or their politics. It's not surprising, but it's saddening all the same.

I had always known that they treated male and female sexuality unequally, and I had definitely noticed that male and female nudity was treated very differently. But I had never realized that a sex scene that shows a woman being coerced into sex, or otherwise giving only dubious consent at best, often finds it easier to get a lower rating than that of a woman actually enjoying herself and whole-heartedly consenting to sex! Is that really a message we should be sending to kids, of either gender? That it's okay as long as you make her do it/someone makes you do it?

Still, it's the system that a lot of people have grown used to, and I can say, it's hard to get used to something else. I like the system that

thene suggests in its place, though the one change I'd make is to separate the SFW tags as well. SFW covers a lot of ground, and it would be good to at least have a way to differentiate between, say, angst and happy fluff. Although a separate "Genre" tag might work better for those purposes.

(On another note, people can still read outside internet stuff at work? I know my workplace has never allowed it. Everything's blocked.)

I want to do a more general post on my tendency to like non-canon pairings. But this is a good way to demonstrate it, so I'll start with this. It's sort of related to this post I made a while ago, about the ladies in SO2 and how they're portrayed.

Star Ocean: The Second Story (and its remake, Second Evolution) is one of my favorite games ever, and between the two versions I think I've finished it seven or eight times. It's also one of the games where this particular tendency definitely shows. Out of all of the possible couples in this game, I anti-ship only two of them, and one of them - Claude/Rena - is the primary canon pairing in the game.

(tl;dr - I like Claude and Rena individually and would probably like the couple better if it hadn't been written in a way that I dislike.)

The world is depending on you and your friends. Or the galaxy, or the universe - either way, someone's depending on you, and they're in danger. Pressing, imminent danger. Maybe you're the last resort after everyone's failed, or maybe you're the Chosen One, or maybe you're just that good, but only you can save the entire world, and you have to do it soon. The Big Bad and his allies are actively working against you - they've already put their plan into motion, and it's going to destroy everything, unless you do something.

So yeah, no hurry. Take your time.

Okay, it's Meta Month for me! The first day is going to be an introduction, just so people know where I'm coming from.

I had a similar post to this on my old fandom journal, but it's out of date now, and I went into a lot of detail about pairings and specific fandoms and the like. If anyone wants to know, I'll go into that much detail later, but this one is a summary.

Before I go into NaNoWriMo mode for November...

In a conversation a few weeks ago, someone brought up the point that while fic and art and the like is fun, meta is more important to fandom than most people give credit for - that discussions keep things going and inspire people. And, y'know, maybe this is something that I haven't spent enough time on, lately. I always find it hard to even post about the games I'm currently playing, lately; I always get caught up by the game, or whatever.

So the month of December is hereby going to be Meta Month for me, and I'm going to spend some of November coming up with topics. If anyone has any suggestions - and any fandom you've ever seen me talk about anywhere ever is fair game, although if I don't feel like I know much about it I'll say so - please comment!

It doesn't matter if the ideas are general or specific - I'm hoping to get a few of the essay ideas that I've had written for this month, for instance. It can be about broader multifandom ideas, as well. I have a few ideas for that.

Also, if you would like December to be Meta Month for you as well, please let me know, and I'll read your stuff too. <3 And feel free to invite others to participate - the point of meta, for me, is to start discussion, and discussion requires other people.
