Jayne knows very well that he's only on Serenity for one reason - because he's really good at makin' sure that nobody gets killed. He's damn good at scarin' people out of doing anything stupid, and if they end up doing something stupid anyway he's good at ending them before they can finish what they started. They don't trust him, and sometimes he's pretty sure that some of 'em don't even like him, but they don't kick him off because he's so good at what he does.

He's not good at bein' part of a crew, though. He's not that great at trustin' or doin' things that people would trust him for. He doesn't want to be in charge because he wants to be in charge; he wants to be in charge because he's hopin' it'll be easier than being under somebody else.

Sometimes he wishes he could be better at being part of the crew, though. It would make things a hell of a lot easier than trying to scheme all the time. He'd probably be happier that way.
