Surveillance

Sometimes Rufus wondered if his father would ever notice that he'd managed to patch into Shinra Tower's surveillance systems, or that he spent the better part of his free time flipping through cameras. It was a lot of trouble sometimes, but a damn sight more entertaining than watching the garbage that the Shinra Broadcasting Network called television, and a lot more educational too. If he was going to end up in charge of the company someday - over his father's dead body, most likely - he would need to know the talents and quirks of his staff.

Lately, though, he's been paying more attention to one particular employee, who was currently sitting in the employee break room and fiddling with some sort of robotic... cat? Was that what it was? Rufus squinted at it, but couldn't make it out. But he could see that Reeve hadn't even touched his food - and it was good food, too, not the slop that they served on the lower levels. Rank had its privileges.

The man couldn't relax, could he? Rufus had to laugh. Even when he wasn't working - and Reeve regularly worked overtime, obviously having no social life at all - he had to be working on something. He couldn't shut it off; he had to keep his mind and his hands busy.

If he ever had the chance, Rufus thought with a grin, maybe he could find a way to help him relax. Maybe he should sneak out and pay him a little visit.

Insecurities

Rufus hadn't been president that long, really. Reeve couldn't claim to be an expert on the man. He wasn't that great of a judge of character; he was good with machines and numbers, not as good with people. But he'd picked up a few things.

The man pretended to be smooth. He tried to be charming, even as he tried to make everyone fear him. But he wasn't, not really. Underneath the thin layer of charm was an awful lot of immaturity, a lot of fear. He tried to pretend that he was better than his father, but in reality there were a lot of scars that his father had left on him. A lot of insecurity, a lot of pain, a lot of other things that he never spoke of.

He was a hard person to believe in, sometimes - a hard person to trust. But Reeve did his best, because he thought that Rufus needed that trust. If only he could survive this situation, he'd make a good leader.

I loved both of these. Rufus' curiousity about Reeve in the first one was adorable and Reeve's thoughts on Rufus were great! I loved how he really pegged Rufus and could see his weaknesses under all his walls.

This pairing is a guilty pleasure of mine but there is so little out there on them. Thank you so much for writing and sharing this.
