Day 9! Had to take a bit of a break before writing this one.

Day Nine

One ficlet (Final Fantasy VI) and one rec list (my favorite Valkyrie Profile fanworks that I haven't already recommended before.)

First a ficlet - sort of a warm-up for a longer story about Cid in the World of Ruin that I have been wanting to write, because I am basically one of the few people who makes sure that he survives on the Solitary Island and I'm still a bit miffed that the game decided to forget about him almost completely if he lives.

Cid has grown to like living alone on the tiny island.

Celes has done everything in her power - short of begging, because he cannot and will not ever imagine her begging for anything - to convince him to leave. They could find a place for him in one of the cities, she has said, where they still have decent food supplies. He could have something other than fish, or the dried meat and bread that she has brought him. It wouldn't be difficult; he could choose any city in the world, and they'd be able to find him a place.

She doesn't understand why he wants to stay there, and he doubts she ever really will. For her the island is a memory of loneliness. If she had stayed there, she would have been trapped without any real hope of finding her friends again. Of course she had to leave; he'd built the raft for her knowing that one way or another he would be left alone, because he didn't want that for her.

But it was different for him. Back in the Empire he'd been responsible - however indirectly - for the greatest atrocities committed in their time. But here, despite his age and his growing weakness, he'd managed to nurse a young woman back to health when she'd needed him the most, and to help her on her way. For him, this island was a memory of when he'd finally managed to do something good for someone else, and he wasn't willing to let go of that.

It wasn't much, in the grand scheme of things. But it was a lot better than what he felt he'd deserved, and he'd take it.

And a rec list for the Valkyrie Profile series (mostly VP: Lenneth, because that's the game that I read the most fiction about.) This actually had to be cut short because I can't find most of the art and fiction I really loved, that I haven't already mentioned. Ah well.)
