My topic for the evening: Crossovers. (Requested by
thene.)
Hmm.
I've tried a few, mostly back in the day. I've never gotten very far. I think my first, long-lost attempt was a FFVI/Gundam Wing crossover? The Empire was building giant Magitek robots. Terra was a brainwashed pilot who was waking up and trying to get away and ends up fighting the Empire. Locke was a guy who managed to steal one with the help of an old man who'd helped design one (who turned out to be Ramuh.) I know the other characters were in there too, and there were a lot more giant robots, but I forget all of the details. (Was I trying to make FFVI characters correspond to GW characters? I don't remember for sure. I do think that Locke and Terra would've ended up being the power couple of the crossover. That's about the only thing I remember about it, in fact.)
I enjoy reading them when I can find one where the author manages to link them together in an interesting way, or if I can think of a reason why they would be connected and want to see people play with it. (My favorite combination of canons would probably be FFIV and FFVIII, if only because of the role that the moon plays in both canons. Also the fact that maybe, when there were no Summoners left, the Eidolons had to find another way to teach people to summon them, and it might've involved a sacrifice of memories. I don't know; I haven't had time to sit down and think about it.)
I haven't written much of the sort of crossover that combines characters from different games in a particular world where they've both lived, either a world that either character is from or a different one. It's just hard for me to separate the character from their circumstances and then expect them to be the same person. I've done it once in a while - I think? Did I write Faris/Setzer fic? I might've done that once. But for me it's tougher to wrap my head around than the sort where the two worlds combine somehow, or one world that somehow includes elements of another one, like the FFVI/GW idea I talked about above.
I like reading them sometimes. It's just really hard for me to come up with ideas to write.
